Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to decide nominations...

The New York Times op-ed contributors Thomas E. Mann and Norman J. Ornstein had an interesting article in today's paper: Delegates of Steel, where they explain some of the history and mystery of the Democratic Party's Superdelegates.  They also suggest that the Superdelegates could perform the exact role for which they were intended -- to prevent a divisive and rancorous convention.  However, considering each candidate's ardent supporters and the still (although Senator Obama clearly enjoys momentum heading into March 4th) tight race, the Democrats may have a more difficult time unifying their party than John McCain, unless a clear, decisive winner emerges soon or barring the capitulation of one candidate pre-convention.
